New Stretchers for CURE Kenya
This spring, a huge truck stopped by CURE Kenya, and every member of staff was eager to find out what was inside! We received a bunch of new equipment including new beds, an x-ray machine, and a few other items that will help our hospital continue to run smoothly.
As we continue to serve a high volume of patients with excellent care, our equipment naturally wears out and breaks down over time. An example of something that needed to be upgraded is our beds (stretchers and transport chairs). We use stretchers to move patients from the operating room tables to the recovery area and later to the ward where they begin their recovery process. There is a lot of movement required for patients after surgery. Their comfort and safety are important, and they require proper equipment.
Our previous stretchers were well used and becoming difficult to control. The nurses would have to assist each other to push just one stretcher. Thankfully, a mystery donor stepped up and donated a significant amount of money wishing only to be identified as “interested friends of the ministry.” They evidently took Matthew 6 to heart:
“ … but when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.”
With this unexpected donation, we were able to purchase new stretchers! “These new stretchers are really easy to operate and are comfortable for the patients.”Seraphine, one of the nurses at CURE Kenya said as she was helping a patient get to her bed in the ward after surgery. The new stretchers have really come in handy because now only one nurse is required to push the patient around the hospital as needed. This frees up our other nurses to attend to other patients, making our hospital more efficient. The new beds also help in cutting down the time needed to move patients around the hospital because they are easier to maneuver. With the old beds, it was difficult to avoid bumping into objects while transporting patients Now, patients and caregivers will remain comfortable as we move them around. Joseph, a nurse who works in the operating said, “Now even some of the smaller nurses who used to struggle to push the stretchers can comfortably push these new ones. We are so grateful that we don’t have to worry about moving the patients from the operating room to the ward anymore.”
