Malawi surgical centre to help 2x the patients
Check out this staggering statistic: nearly 90 percent of children with disabilities in Malawi don’t go to school. 90 percent!
This number is so devastating because, without school, these children are less likely to support themselves independently, better their lives, or contribute to the greater economy, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and hunger.
CURE International Canada envisions a Malawi where the estimated 400,000 children living with disabilities have the opportunity to reach their full potential. To do this, these kids need medical help. But with only four physicians per 100,000 people in the country, healthcare can be difficult to access. This is especially true for those seeking care for orthopedic conditions, as there are only three pediatric orthopedic surgeons in the country—and all three are at Beit-CURE Children’s Hospital of Malawi (CURE Malawi)!

CURE Malawi’s new surgical centre
To improve care for—and share the love of Jesus with—these kids living with life-limiting but treatable disabilities, CURE International Canada is investing $4 million CAD in CURE Malawi to build a new surgical centre, expanded ward, and long-term hostel, which are scheduled to open sometime next year.
Here’s the impact this project will have:
3 new state-of-the-art operating
rooms and 1 procedure room
7 additional ward beds for a total of 65
16 hostel beds for long-stay patients
Help 2x the patients
Improve staff efficiency
This means more kids will be healed and experience God’s love, enabling them to have the future they deserve! There’s still more work to do!

Intensive Care Unit Saves Lives in Uganda
CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda (CURE Uganda) is one of the world’s foremost neurosurgical hospitals, treating children suffering from brain conditions such as hydrocephalus, spina bifida, and tumours. The nature of neurosurgery requires that each patient stay overnight for observation in an intensive care unit (ICU) after their surgery.
In September 2022, CURE Uganda opened a new specialized pediatric ICU to help the country’s most critically ill children. CURE International Canada donated $1 million CAD to help fund the project.
The state-of-the-art building houses 18 fully equipped beds and has significantly boosted the hospital’s critical care capabilities. It features modern amenities like piped oxygen, medical air, advanced ventilators, and infusion pumps.
As the largest pediatric ICU in Uganda, it has become an oasis of hope for children with complex neurological conditions—children like Miracle.
Miracle was born with encephalocele—a condition where her skull didn’t fully close, creating a sac-like swelling.
When Miracle was only a couple of weeks old, CURE’s surgeons corrected her encephalocele, and afterward she spent several days recovering in the new ICU.
